Orion Fans has developed a thermal speed control option for several of its DC fan models. The “green fan” option employs a thermistor control circuit that increases the fan speed only when the temperature rises above a determined set-point, thus reducing the fan’s overall energy consumption by lowering the fan speed when temperatures within the enclosure are below the set-point.

“Manufacturers of enclosures and electrical/electronic equipment cabinets face increasing demands to reduce the overall energy consumption of their systems, yet there is a greater need for thermal management within the enclosures,” said Kevin Knight, Marketing Manager for Orion Fans. “Our thermistor-controlled fans deliver both increased airflow and energy savings.”

According to Knight, the Orion Fans’ thermistor-controlled fans are being specified for a wide range of applications, including industrial controls, servers, telecommunications, networking equipment, computer equipment, motor drives and cabinets, electronic enclosures and panels.

The thermistor control circuit can be mounted directly in the fan hub, or remotely mounted via an orange lead wire to be positioned anywhere in the enclosure, giving design engineers the flexibility to regulate fan speed based on ambient temperature in a specific area.

The thermistor control option is offered on the following Orion Fan DC models:

• OD8032 Series – 80 x 32mm, 12/24/48V, 3200 - 4800rpm, 26 - 42cfm airflow

• OD8038 Series – 80 x 38mm, 12/24/48V, 2500 - 4000rpm, 38 - 61cfm airflow

• OD1238 Series – 120 x 38mm, 12/24/48V, 2000 - 3000rpm, 84 - 127cfm airflow

• OD127 Series – 127 x 38mm, 12/24/48V, 2950 - 4500rpm, 107 - 242cfm airflow

• OD172S Series – 172 x 150 x 51mm, 12/24/48V, 1600 - 3900rpm, 125 – 300cfm

• OD180APL Series – 180 x 65mm, 12/24/48V, 1700 - 2800rpm, 250 - 465cfm airflow

• OD254 Series – 254 x 89mm, 12/24/48V, 1500 - 2500rpm, 500 - 900cfm airflow

In addition to the thermal speed control, other optional features available on most DC fan models include: tachometer output, PWM input, constant speed control with variable input voltage, and rotation detection alarm. All Orion fans are UL/cUL, TUV and CE approved.
